Internship credit is only available for work performed at a professional level. This judgment as to whether work to be performed will be at a professional level is at the sole discretion of the internship coordinator. However, in general, work performed for tax preparation or other small businesses (e.g., H&R Block, small not-for-profit organizations, etc.) will not qualify. Also, internship credit will not be given for your student work job or civil service job at SIU.

ACCT 495 Internship: Supervised work experience in professional accounting. Prerequisite: Outstanding record in accounting. Grade: Pass/Fail only. Not for graduate credit.

Only students with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA (A=4.0) will be considered for internship credit. This minimum applies to both your overall GPA and your accounting (upper level classes only) GPA. Also, students MUST have completed a minimum of two (2) upper level accounting classes.

ACCT 595 Internship: Supervised work experience in professional accounting. Prerequisite: Outstanding record in accounting. Grade: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory only.

Only students with a minimum of a 3.2 GPA, both overall and in graduate accounting courses, will be considered for internship credit.

Procedures for College Credit

  • Complete an Internship Application form.
  • Obtain an internship on your own.
  • Write a brief letter about what you expect to do on the internship. Attach it to the application, plus your resume and transcript, and return these documents to the internship coordinator.
  • During the internship, write a brief letter about what you have accomplished to date and what you hope to accomplish during the second half of the internship and submit this formal, signed letter to the internship coordinator.
  • After completing the internship:
    • Write a final letter about what you accomplished on the internship and submit it formally to the internship coordinator.
    • Have the company for which you interned send a letter directly to the internship coordinator verifying that you completed the internship successfully and that you worked a minimum of 300 hours during the internship. The letter should state the nature of the work performed and should be mailed to the following address:

    Dr. Julie Sobery, Internship Coordinator
School of Accountancy, Mail Code 4631
    Southern Illinois University
    Carbondale, IL 62901

  • Register for ACCT 495 or 595. The internship coordinator will process a grade of pass (P) or fail (F) for ACCT 495 and Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) for ACCT 595 for your college record at the end of the semester after all correspondence has been received.
