After 29 years on the College of Business faculty, Professor Masoner says “there many things I have grown to love here. When I began as a young teacher, it was the high diving board at the SIU recreation center. Today it would be a stroll around campus on a beautiful fall afternoon.”

In fact, Masoner places walking among his “three passions” which also include farming and reading. “I collect reading lists in search of interesting non-fiction books of which I read 20 to 30 a year,” he said.

Born and raised in Oklahoma, his first accounting job was with the state auditor’s office in Oklahoma. During college, he was hired by Exxon to audit its filling stations in the Carolinas. Building on those experiences, Lybrand, Ross Bros, and Montgomery hired Masoner to perform corporate financial statement audits in New York City.

This may explain why the former “big city kid” finds farming “infinitely fun,” he said. Seven years ago, Masoner purchased 40 acres, a worn-out tractor, and some ancient farm implements. “I had a pole barn put up and a vacuum planter cut down from four rows to two. One winter I bought a trailer kit, a 5 hp engine, a mig welder, and some industrial supplies. With this, I built a belt thresher,” he said.

In the classroom, Masoner’s work is markedly different. He performs pedagogical research and is currently developing new computer networking exercises for his course in that area.

Masoner earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Oklahoma and his doctorate in economics from the University of Minnesota.
