During the 2007 College of Business Honors Day, Professor Cornett won almost every award a faculty member could win. She won the Outstanding Research Honor Roll Award, Outstanding Researcher of the Year Award, Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher Honor Roll Award, Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher of the Year Award, Outstanding Graduate Teacher Honor Roll Award and Outstanding Graduate Teacher of the Year Award.
This kind of success is nothing new to Cornett. In 2005, she was one of only 10 Southern Illinois University Carbondale faculty members recognized for superior scholarship, through the University's "Excellence Through Commitment Awards Program."
The "Excellence" initiative standardizes individual college efforts and offers more lucrative awards. College-level winners each receive $3,000 outright plus a matching amount through the Office of Research and Development to support professional activities during the next fiscal year.
Cornett specializes in bank performance, bank regulation, corporate finance and investments. In 2005, an article in the Journal of Finance Literature ranked her 320th out of a list of 5,800 authors whose articles have appeared in the field's seven top academic journals between 1953 and 2002.
Cornett has co-authored (with Dr. Anthony Saunders of New York University) a textbook in the area of Financial Institutions titled Fundamentals of Financial Institutions Management (Irwin/McGraw-Hill, 1999). She has also written and published several articles in the areas of bank regulation, corporate finance, and investments. Articles authored by Cornett have appeared in such academic journals as The Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, The Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, and the Journal of Banking and Finance.
Cornett’s recent publication in the Journal of Finance, coauthored with Hamid Mehran of the New York Federal Reserve Bank and Hassan Tehranian of Boston College examines the performance of bank operating ratios, earnings per share, and stock prices after the issue of new shares of common stock.
Cornett earned her bachelor's in 1978 from Knox College in Galesburg and both her master of business administration and doctoral degrees from Indiana University in 1983. She joined the faculty in 1990.
