Professor Musumeci’s interest in finance piqued at a young age – “during a statewide high school math contest in Dallas,” said Musumeci. “Most of the participants were private school kids, and they pretty much ignored us public-school students. Well, as you can imagine, it felt pretty good to beat them.  My Dad sent the newspaper clipping to my grandfather who said he was going to carry it in his wallet until he died, so that had a pretty big impact on me.”

Originally from Texas, Musumeci earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. He joined the SIU College of Business faculty in 1993 and teaches corporate finance, investments and risk management. His research focuses on methodology issues and asset allocation for retirement purposes.

A celebrated instructor, Musumeci earned honors as the College of Business and Administration Undergraduate Teacher of the Year in 2000 and Graduate Teacher of the Year in 1999.

Among other things, Musumeci credits the “good work environment” for his achievements. “All of us here in the finance department pretty much share the same values and respect each other, and as long as we do our jobs well, no one really cares much about the way in which we got there,” he said.

Despite his individual accomplishments, Musumeci is quick to tout accolades received by to his department. “It is very productive in research, being ranked in the top 5.6 percent according to the Financial Management Association Journal.  This is above all of our peer institutions.”

Success is nothing new for the Musumeci family.  Musumeci’s father coached a bridge team that won four world championships and he ghost-wrote the most popular nationally syndicated bridge column.
