CoBA's major in Finance offers three specializations to meet the varied career goals of our students: Financial Management, Investments and Financial Institutions. The Financial Management program provides the background for a career in the financial operations of business firms and public institutions. The Investments specialization is designed for those interested in Security Analysis and Portfolio Management. The financial institutions specialization is designed for those interested in the operations of financial intermediaries and financial markets.
Finance Majors must maintain a cumulative 2.00 grade point average in the Finance prefix (FIN) courses taken at SIUC in addition to meeting all of the College of Business and Administration's retention and graduation requirements. Finance Majors who fail for two consecutive semesters to maintain the 2.00 cumulative grade point average in Finance Prefix courses will be required to drop Finance as their major.
Financial Management
The financial management specialization prepares students for careers in managing the financial operations of business firms and public institutions. It focuses on managing cash, receivables, inventories and analyzing new and existing investment projects.
Investments
The investments track prepares student for positions such as portfolio manager, security analyst, and investment broker. Students study modern concepts and issues in financial options and futures markets. Students also study risk management, working capital management, and capital budgeting issues.
Financial Institutions
Two tracks are offered in the financial institutions specialization. Option I is designed for students interested in the financial operations of banks, brokerage firms, and other financial institutions. Option II is designed for students who are interested in real estate. Students in the financial institutions specialization study financial markets, bank management, portfolio management, and real estate topics.
