Professor White is an expert on operations management, a field that “has been changing dynamically over the past twenty years,” he said. White focuses on operations strategy, quality and performance measurement.
White’s publications have appeared in journals such as Decision Sciences, Interfaces, International Journal of Operations and Production Management and Journal of Operations Management. He has been an associate editor of the Journal of Operations Management, and was named Editor of the Year by that journal in 2001.
He has also been honored as Researcher of the Year and Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher of the Year in the College of Business and Administration. He is co-author of the textbook Core Concepts in Operations Management, published by Wiley, and authored several chapters for the Encyclopedia of Production and Manufacturing Management, published by Kluwer Academic Publishers.
White has held several administrative posts at SIU College of Business including interim dean, associate dean, director of the MBA program and acting director of the Pontikes Center for Management of Information. Before joining SIU in 1978, White taught at Loyola University of Chicago.
White was born on Long Island, New York and raised in New Jersey, “a very scenic area near the Pocono Mountains and Delaware Water Gap,” he said. White is no stranger to city life but he prefers southern Illinois and “the rural environment,” he said.
When White isn’t teaching in the classroom, he’s instructing students on the dance floor. White and his wife are avid ballroom dancers and certified instructors who teach dancing through SIU's Continuing Education.
White earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, an MBA and doctorate in business administration from The University of Cincinnati. He is certified in Production and Inventory Management at the Fellow level by APICS—The Association for Operations Management, and has served as a regional judge for the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association Team Excellence Award competition. He has been active in professional organizations, serving as President of the Midwest Region and National Vice President of the Decision Science Institute, in addition to other appointed and elected positions.
