Accounting students receive honors

by Sun Min

Five accounting students received honors during the Central Region Student Conference of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) in Schaumburg on Oct. 5.

Fresnel Houecande of Benin won a $2,000 All-State scholarship; Shanika Cleveland of Centreville won a $1,000 Plante and Moran scholarship; Anju Giri of Nepal and Conrad Houeto of Benin won $2,600 Becker CPA Review scholarships; and Gloria Hounsinou of Benin won a $1,000 Yaegar CPA review scholarship.

There were 22 scholarships handed out during the regional conference and SIUC students nabbed five of them.  “We are very proud of our students,” said Marcus D. Odom, director of the SIUC School of Accountancy.  “They represent the best of SIU and the best of the nation’s accounting students.”

Since its inception, NABA has provided millions of dollars in scholarship funds to deserving students.  Through the generous contributions of individuals, groups and organizations that share NABA's desire to break through the economic barrier minorities often experience, NABA has offered scholarships on a national, regional and local level.
