A research paper by David A. Rakowski, assistant professor of finance at SIU College of Business, will be featured in The Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis (JFQA), a top-ranking publication.
“When I found out about this, I had a feeling of immense relief since I’ve been working on this paper for around six years,” Rakowski said. His paper entitled “Fund Flow Volatility and Performance” asserts that when investors make unpredictable contributions or withdrawals from a mutual fund, the fund tends to have worse performance because of higher transaction costs. “Anyone with a long term investment in the stock market, such as a pension plan, has the potential to benefit from the paper because funds will be better able to manage their transaction costs,” he said.
The JFQA is published quarterly by the Michael G. Foster School of Business at the University of Washington in cooperation with the University of Utah David Eccles School of Business and New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business. The journal publishes theoretical and empirical research in financial economics. Topics include corporate finance, investments, capital and security markets and quantitative methods of particular relevance to financial researchers.
In 2003, Rakowski’s “Fund Flow Volatility and Performance” paper won the Student Paper Award from the Society of Quantitative Practitioners at the WFA Conference. He teaches investments, international finance, corporate finance and financial institutions.
“What I enjoy most about teaching at SIU is that I feel that I’m helping students learn something that may be useful for their jobs,” said Rakowski who joined the SIUC faculty in 2003.
Before launching his academic career, he gained corporate experience at Delaware Investment Advisors in Philadelphia, Pa. and V. Alexander and Co. in Memphis, Tenn.
Rakowski earned a bachelor of business administration from Stetson University and a doctorate in finance from Georgia State University.
