- Dean J. Dennis Cradit announced that business college’s new name. Formerly the College of Business, it is now the College of Business. "Our simpler name more accurately reflects the college’s academic offerings,” said Cradit. The college offers degrees in accounting, business economics, business and administration, finance, management and marketing.

Greg Lee |
- Greg A. Lee (class of 1972) a senior vice president for Motorola, has committed to the creation of an endowed professorship for a faculty member in the College of Business. Greg’s generous gift of $250,000 will greatly improve efforts to recruit and retain distinguished professors. Greg is a Hall of Famer, member of the Dean’s External Advisory Board and winner of the 2008 Alumni Achievement Award. He also delivered the keynote address at the May, 2008 commencement.

- The Southern Illinoisan and WSIL-TV profiled accounting student Janiece Blake who is a single mom and a top student. She will be working for State Farm in Bloomington.
- The Southern Illinoisan profiled marketing student William Kasel whose company, JumpFox is paid by advertisers to place ads on facebook.com. Kasel has partnered with Max Custom Media out of New York City, an advertising company for companies such as Showtime, Viacom and Heineken.
- Accounting student Fresnel Houecande of the Republic of Benin won a National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) scholarship. Houecande along with accounting student Gloria Hounsinou also received regional NABA scholarships. Houecande, Hounsinou and accounting student Victoria Young attended the NABA convention in Atlanta, a trip sponsored by Boeing. Houecande said, "I am really thankful for Business Placement Director Donna Margolis. Her coaching and support have been invaluable to me. I am also grateful for School of Accountancy Director Dr. Marcus Odom and the College of Business faculty for their undivided attention to their students. I think the college offers more than just a degree to its students. It prepares them for careers.”

- Management student Brad Miller is one of four interns chosen for an NFL sales and marketing internship with the Kansas City Chiefs. More than 600 applicants nationwide applied for the coveted positions.
- Marketing student Steve Caulkins has secured an internship with SIU Assistant Athletics Director of Marketing Mark Gazdik.
- A group of College of Business students experienced international business during a four-week summer intercession study trip to Europe. The 37 SIU students joined with 40 students from all over the U.S. (University of Memphis, Northeastern University, Creighton University, UT-Arlington, among others) to complete courses at the prestigious Grenoble Ecole de Management (School of Management) in Grenoble, France. They also participated in professional visits to various multinational businesses and enjoying cultural activities in France, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. Dr. Suzanne Nasco, associate professor of marketing, and Dennis Nasco, lecturer, accompanied the group of graduate and undergraduate students on the intense field seminar.

High School Students |
- Minority high school students from across the U.S. visited the College of Business this summer to explore business career opportunities. The College of Business hosts the annual weeklong residency program for 55-60 students who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors in high school this fall at schools as far away as California. Director of Undergraduate Recruitment and Minority Programs Michael Haywood said the seminar introduces underrepresented student populations to the numerous and varied opportunities available in the world of business.
- Accounting Society President Ashley Gibson reports that her group was selected to receive the Gold Certificate of Excellence for the 2007-2008 academic year. The requirements of Gold Status involved extraneous requirements, including professional meetings, plant visits, newsletters, meetings, updated website, social events, etc.

- The Southern Illinoisan profiled marketing alumna Gillian Prepejchal who owns a business that creates Swarovksi designs to embellish cell phones, pageant dresses, pens, sunglasses, champagne flutes, hats and more.
- The Southern Illinoisan profiled finance alumnus Derek Hood who built his Edwards Jones office into one of the top 15 to 20 percent of all Edward Jones offices nationwide.
- Smart CEO Magazine published an article by John M. Collard entitled, “Deathbed Businesses: When a Business Stops Growing, It Starts Dying.” Collard, a finance alumnus, Dean's External Advisory Board member and Hall of Famer, is chairman of Strategic Management Partners. He is a turnaround specialist and equity capital investor.
- Finance alumna Trisha Mitchell was named circulation manager at The Southern Illinoisan.

- NBC Nightly News http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/#25080830 profiled the Audubon Nature Institute Insectarium in New Orleans. Taylor Studios fabricated several exhibits at the bug museum and is currently installing exhibits for the theater and gift shop. The president and owner of Taylor Studios is Betty Brennan, a marketing alumna, Hall of Famer and member of the Dean’s External Advisory Board. Plus, Newsweek and USA Today profiled Taylor Studios’ cyclorama of the Gettysburg battle.

- Dr. Steven J. Karau has been promoted to professor of management. Karau was featured on the national ABC News program "20/20" for a segment about productivity in the workplace. His research revealed that people who work in groups tend to slack off. Karau earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Arizona State University in 1987 and master’s and doctoral degrees in social psychology from Purdue University in 1990 and 1993, respectively.
- Dr. Suzanne A. Nasco has been promoted to associate professor of marketing. Nasco earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from University of Florida in 1993 and a doctorate in social psychology from University of Notre Dame in 1999.
- Dr. Ania Rose has been promoted to associate professor of accounting and Emerson/Groennert Professor of Accounting. Rose earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in accounting from Texas A&M University.
- Dr. Jacob Rose has been promoted to professor of accounting. Rose has developed custom software and training materials for the U.S. government. His materials are employed by the U.S. Department of Treasury, Department of Homeland Security, Internal Revenue Service and other federal law enforcement agencies to train employees in digital fraud detection techniques and to search for fraud during field investigations. Rose is a three-degree graduate of Texas A& M University, earning a bachelor's degree in accounting, a master's degree in accounting and a doctorate in accounting information systems.
- Henry J. Rehn Professor of Finance Dr. Wallace N. Davidson and doctoral student Vaibhav Sharma won the Best Paper and Best Presentation awards during the 2008 Academic Business World International Conference in Nashville, Tenn. “It’s an honor for me,” said Sharma, whose paper is entitled “Executive Compensation Following Spin-Offs.”
- Research conducted by Dr. Davidson, Assistant Professor of Finance Dr. David A. Rakowski along with former doctoral students Yixi Ning and Eahab Elsaid scholars will be profiled in the Journal of Management and Governance which is an internationally renowned publication. Their paper entitled “The Antecedents of Simultaneous Appointment to CEO and Chair” covers the issue of duality.

Reed Nelson |
- Every summer, Professor of Management Dr. Reed Nelson teaches at Fundação Instituto de Administração, part of Brazil’s University of São Paulo. In June, Dean J. Dennis Cradit visited the campus and met with Brazilian executives and academics about efforts to implement a Disney model of customer service at SIU College of Business. Cradit and Nelson also met with administrators at the University of São Paulo, described by Nelson as “the country’s largest and most influential university.” At the Brazilian institution, Nelson teaches executive education and collaborates with professors on research projects.
- KPMG Tax Research Professor Allan Karnes was featured on National Public Radio and WSIL-TV for a story on the national and local economy.
- Professor of Management Dr. Steven J. Karau and Associate Professor of Management Dr. Michael D. Michalisin, management alumnus Dr. Abdel Elsaid and management doctoral students Bryan Stinchfield, Andrew J. Setterstrom and Matthew S. Wood will present papers at the Academy of Management (AoM) meeting in Anaheim, Calif., August 8 through 13. The Academy of Management Conference is the premier conference in management research. The Academy of Management is the leading professional association for scholars dedicated to creating and disseminating knowledge about management and organizations.

Marge Smith |
- Marge Smith, office systems specialist III for the marketing department, is the winner of the 2008 Outstanding Service Award. Marketing Chair Dr. Terry Clark believes Smith is very deserving. “Marge is the best, always cheerful and willing to go above and beyond to help out,” Clark said. Smith joined the department in 1995 and felt right at home from the start. “I love my job. The marketing department and its faculty are the best! The department is so open. I get a chance to meet a lot of students and make connections with them,” she said. A native of southern Illinois, Smith was born in Carbondale and educated in Murphysboro. She also raised a family in Carterville. “I love the area and I have no plans to leave, especially now that I am the proud grandmother of a one-year-old girl. She is amazing,” Smith said.
- WSIL-TV profiled Professor of Marketing Dr. Gordon Bruner II for a story on rising gas prices. Bruner has been named one of the “Most Cited Internet Advertising Authors” by the Journal of Advertising. Two of Bruner’s articles were also among the Journal’s list of “Most Cited Internet-Related Papers.”
